Getting Around St John.

A little preparation goes a long way. Here's everything you need to know before you arrive so you can relax and enjoy every minute on the island.

A few things that will make your trip smoother, straight from us.

Getting Around We recommend renting a car. It gives you the freedom to explore on your own schedule. A 4x4 or SUV is always the better choice here. The roads on St. John are steep, narrow, and winding, and some of the best spots require a little climb to get there. Google Maps works well for navigation, so keep it handy.

One important heads up: you'll be driving on the left side of the road. The cars are American with the steering wheel on the left, which makes it a little disorienting at first. Take it slow, especially on the hills and sharp turns. There's no rush, and the views from the road are worth stopping for anyway.

Parking: be mindful of where you leave your car. Designated spots fill up fast at popular beaches. Park in unmarked spots at your own risk, as towing does happen.

Groceries & Supplies Stock up thoughtfully. Grocery options on St. John are limited compared to the mainland, and not every brand or product you're used to will be available. If there are specific items you can't live without, bring them from home or pick them up in St. Thomas before you hop on the ferry.

Paying for Things Cards and cash both work fine across the island. That said, keep some cash on hand for local spots, food trucks, and taxis, which are cash-preferred.

Weather Classic tropical Caribbean. Warm and sunny most days with the occasional scattered shower that passes quickly. Beach weather is the norm, not the exception. Pack light, bring sunscreen, and always have a layer for the evenings.

Wifi & Phones Wifi is available widely across the island. Cell service is generally solid in Cruz Bay and along the main roads.

Island Pace Things move slower here, and that's the whole point. Restaurants, shops, ferry lines, everything operates on island time. Embrace it. You're on vacation in one of the most beautiful places on earth. There is nowhere you need to be in a hurry.

A Word on the People St. John locals are warm, proud, and welcoming, but they appreciate basic courtesy. Always greet people before launching into a question or request. A "good morning," "good afternoon," or "good evening" goes a long way and is simply how things are done here. It's a small thing that shows real respect.
